Colebrooke glosses the group as 'regent of the star Canopus'. — H.T. Colebrooke (1808)
'Jar-born' — synonym of Agastya in the same lexical entry, from the legend of the sage's birth in a water-jar. A name of the sage transferred to the star by the lexicon's own equation of the two. Note that Sūrya Siddhānta 9.16 independently uses kumbhabhava ('pot-born') for the same star.
