मन्दाकिनी वियद्गङ्गा स्वर्णदी सुरदीर्घिका ॥ १.१.११६ ॥
'The river of heaven.' Footnote: 'The Ganges of the sky, suggested probably by the milky-way.' — H.T. Colebrooke (1808)

First of four synonyms Amarasiṃha gives for the celestial river. Colebrooke's own footnote reads that this is 'The Ganges of the sky, suggested probably by the milky-way' — the equation is explicit in the earliest public-domain scholarship on the text. NOTE the contrast with the Purāṇic layer already on file, where Mandākinī is always a terrestrial Himalayan river and the Milky Way word is chāyāpatha.
