Burgess: 'the identification of Viçakha [is] in some respects more doubtful than that of any other asterism in the series'; the defined position identifies the junction-star with faint ι Librae, though he believes the asterism 'was originally composed of the two stars α and β Librae'. Colebrooke suggested o or χ Librae; modern lists often use α Librae (Zubenelgenubi).

TWO stars, horn-shaped (viṣāṇa-saṃsthāna), deity Indrāgni, gotra Śāṃkhāyanīya. This bears directly on the most doubtful identification in the whole series: the two-star count sides with the 'ancient authors' whom Colebrooke cites against the later four-star reckoning, and the horn figure fits the two scale-stars α and β Librae — i.e. it supports Burgess's own belief that the asterism 'was originally composed of α and β Librae' rather than the faint ι Librae his coordinates forced on him.
The Sanskrit Wikisource Devanāgarī prints विसाखयोस् च with a typographic स for श; the correct form is विशाखयोश्च. Both GRETIL texts read 'viśākhayoś ca' / 'visākhayos ca' respectively — the Kāśikā-derived one has the correct viśākhayoś. I have quoted the Devanāgarī as actually fetched and flag the error here rather than silently emending. 5.1.110 reads ५.१.११० विशाखा अषाढात् अण् मन्थदण्डयः (Wikisource, with a corrupt final; GRETIL: viśākhā-aṣāḍhād aṇ mantha-daṇḍayoḥ).
Three sūtras of Pāṇini's own: 1.2.62 viśākhayoś ca (a Vedic singular for the dual — so Viśākhā too is a PAIR for Pāṇini, exactly as with Punarvasu), 4.3.34 (in the ten-name list), and 5.1.110 viśākhā-aṣāḍhād aṇ mantha-daṇḍayoḥ (deriving vaiśākha 'churning-stick' and āṣāḍha 'staff' — an interesting non-calendrical use). Patañjali quotes 5.1.110 verbatim twice (Kielhorn ii.362.2-11) and Vasu on 1.2.63 gives 'viśākhānurādhāḥ, the stars Viśākhā and Anurādhā' as the counter-example. The two-star reading is significant for the disputed identification: Pāṇini's Viśākhā is at minimum a dual, which fits the α/ι Librae pair better than a single star.

SIDDHĀNTA DARPAṆA XII (Sāmanta, 1869): dhruva (polar longitude) 207°00', śara (polar latitude) 2°00' south. The direction comes from XII.11, which makes the śara southern for the asterisms numbered 4, 5, 6, 9, 13, 14, 16–21 and 24 and northern for all the rest; XII.12–13 give the asterism 5 star(s). TRUE VALUES for 1870 CE, reduced to Sāmanta's OWN sidereal zero (his Citrā = 179°, i.e. Spica; implied ayanāṃśa 22°12'), as polar longitude / polar latitude: ι Lib 206°28' / -1°55'; α² Lib 201°11' / 0°22'; β Lib 207°45' / 8°50'. VAṬEŚVARA-SIDDHĀNTA VIII.2.1–2 (904 CE) puts the same junction star at Alin (Scorpio) 2° (= 212°00' measured from the sidereal origin) with a śara of 2°00' south (VIII.2.5–6, direction by VIII.2.8). ★ DECISIVE FOR THE DISPUTED IDENTIFICATION. Sāmanta's independently observed 207° / 2° S lands on ι Librae to within 32' of longitude and 5' of latitude, whereas α² Librae is 5°49' away in longitude and on the WRONG SIDE of the ecliptic (+0°22' N, not south), and β Librae — although only 45' off in longitude — has a latitude of +8°50' N against the text's 2° S, an error of nearly 11°. Since the direction rule at XII.11 explicitly puts Viśākhā's śara in the SOUTH, β Librae is excluded outright. Sāmanta, working with his own naked-eye instruments in Odisha, therefore corrects the inherited Sūrya-Siddhānta figure (213°) downwards by 6° and in doing so converges exactly on the faint star ι Librae that Burgess was forced to accept and that al-Bīrūnī could not identify.
This is the printed segment of the continuous dhruvaka list (VIII.2.1–2) that carries this star's own figure; the star's kṣepa is item no. 16 of the unbroken numeral run of VIII.2.5–6, which cannot be split, so the whole passage is also given verbatim under db_id 'yogatara-catalog'. VAṬEŚVARA-SIDDHĀNTA VIII.2 (904 CE) gives the junction star's dhruvaka (polar longitude) as Alin (Scorpio) 2° — Vaṭeśvara states the dhruvakas as degrees WITHIN each zodiacal sign, not as absolute longitudes, so this is 212°00' from the sidereal origin — and its kṣepa (polar latitude, VIII.2.5–6) as 2°00', south by the rule of VIII.2.8 (a verse the edition notes is identical with Brahmagupta's Khaṇḍakhādyaka I.9.13). TRUE VALUES for 904 CE reduced to Vaṭeśvara's own sidereal zero (his Citrā = 3° of Libra = 183°), as polar longitude / polar latitude: ι Lib 210°24' / -1°50'; α² Lib 205°17' / 0°30'; β Lib 212°25' / 9°08'. For comparison Sāmanta (1869) gives 207°00' / 2°00' south. Vaṭeśvara's 2° of Scorpio (= 212°) with a southern śara of 2° (verse 8, which the edition notes is identical with Brahmagupta's Khaṇḍakhādyaka I.9.13, puts Viśākhā in the southern group) agrees with ι Librae's latitude (1°50' S in his frame) and excludes β Librae, whose latitude is 9°08' N. On longitude alone β Librae (212°25') would be the better fit and ι Librae (210°24') the worse, which is precisely why the identification has stayed unsettled; the latitude, however, points only one way. Verse 7 adds a correction of 40 minutes to Viśākhā's śara (khakṛtāḥ 40 kalāḥ, grouped with Vaiśva = Uttarāṣāḍhā and Āpa = Pūrvāṣāḍhā).

Chinese lunar lodge (xiu) 氐 Di; T1301 renders the name semantically as 善挌 ('Good Frame'). THE MOST CONSEQUENTIAL RESULT FOR A DOUBTFUL DB ENTRY. Viśākhā is currently ι Librae in the database (a faint star Burgess derived from Sūrya Siddhānta coordinates while himself believing the asterism was originally α and β Librae). Both early Chinese witnesses give TWO stars — 氐宿二星 (T1300, c. 230 CE) and 有二要星 (T1301, c. 307 CE) — exactly the Śārdūlakarṇāvadāna's dvitāraṃ viṣāṇa-saṃsthānam, and all three Chinese texts keep the HORN figure (牛角 / 羊角 / 牛角). The two-star horn can only be the pair of scale-stars α and β Librae. The Xiuyao jing's four is the Chinese lodge count (Yang Jingfeng: 氐四星). The deity is Indrāgni, transcribed in full in T1299 as 因伽陀羅祇尼 = Indra + Agni, matching indrāgnidaivatam; T1301 splits it to Indra, T1300 to Agni. Sesame-and-flowers (烏麻雜華 / 油花) matches tila-puṣpāhāram, and the 45-muhūrta value is confirmed twice.
Two Rāmāyaṇa verses quoted together: CE references R_6,004.045 and R_6,090.030. The Mahābhārata parallel is CE 06,003.025c 'viśākhayoḥ samīpasthau bṛhaspatiśanaiścarau'. Griffith's Book VI Canto IV covers the first; he omits the second, so Dutt is quoted for it.
Three data of real value. (a) FORM: the Rāmāyaṇa uses the DUAL 'vimale ca prakāśete viśākhe' (6.4.45) and the Mahābhārata the dual genitive 'viśākhayoḥ samīpasthau' (6.3.25) — the asterism is conceived as TWO stars, which matches Griffith's footnote ('containing four or originally two stars') and supports a two-star yogatārā rather than the four-star Libra figure. (b) DEITY: Rāmāyaṇa 6.90.30 calls it 'the nakṣatra of the Kosalas, whose deity is manifestly INDRĀGNI' — the standard dual deity Indrāgnī, here made explicit. (c) LINEAGE: it is twice called 'the nakṣatra of us, the great-souled Ikṣvākus' (6.4.45) and 'the star of the Kosalas' (6.90.30) — the tutelary asterism of Rāma's dynasty, the counterpart of Mūla for the rākṣasas. The ι Librae yogatārā is imported from the Sūrya Siddhānta entry.

Star-sense certain: DUAL viśākhe ('the two Visakha stars') with the verb also in the dual (anuvartete), following the śaśāṅka-lekhā, the crescent moon. Dusyanta's aside caps a chain of similes about things that naturally seek their proper partner. Monier Williams' note on this line is the clearest public-domain statement of the mythic frame behind the whole naksatra system: the 27 asterisms are the Moon's wives, Rohini is his favourite, and the rest - Visakha among them - are jealous.
